A permit is not required to build a fence. However, the following requirements must be met:
Do I need a permit to build a landscape retaining wall?
A permit is required for a landscape retaining wall that is more than 1.5 metres (4.9 feet) tall.
Construction of a retaining wall from 1.5 metres (4.9 feet) to 2.5 metres (8.2 feet) requires a building permit and professionally engineered designs. Retaining walls shall not be closer than 2.0 metres (6.6 feet) apart.
The maximum height of a fence located on top of a retaining wall is 1.3 metres (4.3 feet).
The construction of a retaining wall that is higher than 2.5 metres (8.2 feet) is not permitted without a Development Variance Permit. Setbacks are not required from the property line.
Retaining walls under 1.5 metres (4.9 feet) do not require a permit, however; site location should be confirmed with the Building Inspection Department staff.
Note: A retaining wall that is attached to a building and is greater than 1.2 metres (3.9 feet) requires a permit and professionally engineered design.
Do I need a permit to build a shed?
A permit is not required for any structure that is 10 square metres (107.6 square feet) or less. Structures larger than 10 m2 require a building permit.
